120. The Meaning of Life in My Story Class 2020

Storytelling and the Meaning of Life
Class #1 The Meaning of Life
Class #2 Being Human - Stories are about us, for us.
Class #1 The Meaning of Life
in my first class, we were greeted with "the meaning of life" mind map on the whiteboard.
that was interesting... and i guess it was interesting more for me than my students Lol.
the notes on the board got me talking for the next 4 hours, as i used it to introduce the new students to the "exciting" world of storytelling Lol
hopefully it clicked.
hopefully it got their attention.
hopefully, they will embrace learning the art of storytelling.
who knows.
Class #2 - Being Human
Stories Are About Us, For Us.
another theme i explored.... is being human.
i think this would strike a chord.
stories, characters, themes are about being human.
humans are full of flaws but still lovable,
and they have the ability to rise when their calling comes.
i even made them promise themselves
- to promise to do something they know they can achieve this year.
and i like that they have taken it seriously. how sweet.
And after 15 weeks...
even after the week7 assessment
and after the whole semester is over,
the works submitted were way beyond my expectations.
i'm wondering if the concept of the meaning of life and being human made a difference
in their lives,
in their learning,
in their thoughts and dreams...
i wish.
and i have to believe.
anyway, the class made me so proud!
they did so well, i have...
distinctions - 4 students
A Grade - 4 students
1 fail or completely given up (that's sad)
the rest had done better than expected
or had managed to scrape through when they could have failed or given up.

Q: What do you think is the key to your success?
Vera:
omg. i never feel successful. ever.
i feel accomplished.
i feel educated.
i feel experienced...
Successful?
Probably not that much.
because there're many ways to measure success in fashion.
are you the biggest player in the world in fashion?
or are you the most respected?
or are you the most creative and free?
or are you the most consistent?
i mean these are all the things that plague every designer,
all these noise are in your head
any designer who is a serious designer would say the same thing
and so success... success?
i would say... probably
it's my passion,
my dedication,
and my love of fashion,
and also my experience
and my education...
i am a student, i like to study
and i respect my fellow designers
and many of them, i stand in awe of them.
talent, creativity, work ethic, integrity...
it's a very very hard business
you have to love it to be in it
you shouldn't be in it if you don't love it
for me success - i don't know how to define it
a lot of people define success by fame - but for me...
it's work ethic, integrity, humility, the constant search to do it better,
to not be satisfied (with what you've done)
and to realise that you can always do something newer and more evolved every time...
it's an industry that i'm proud to be in, as a member of the fashion industry.

this year, i was only given one class to teach. they had assigned 3 new lecturers to the other 4 classes. they've also appointed a new module leader for the slides i provided in the first 2 years. it was quite disheartening to assume that i've been "replaced". but on the positive side, being module leader is a big responsibility with no extra bonus or incentive and more importantly, teaching one class means i can spend all my time and energy to mentor them!
and who knows, maybe the reason for recruiting so many new lecturers for storytelling could be a sign that the school is preparing plans to expand storytelling into ONE diploma course... hmmm...

well, i was right. sadly so. they took all my materials wholesale and dropped my classes to zero. i don't know if i'm paid more than the others but this is no surprise. maybe this break would disqualify me from a "long service" award that they don't really want to offer me Lol. whatever. what they did = not nice indeed. i just wonder why this happened. i learnt and gained loads of experience from all this and MORE. so, should i move on to better things? (i guess) i have lost every respect i have for this art school or the team that decided this incident. is it sour grapes to say good bye or good riddance to all the hard work and extra time i put in there? is it my imagination or am i one of the best (or the best) storytelling mentors there? ha. for those few students who had benefited (prolly only a handful of students), i bet i had allowed my students achieve more than what exceeds expectations - like that one starfish that i saved on a beach littered with thousands of dying starfish... to have even been able to save any one - that itself is reward and the mindset for making peace with this incident.

How to know your life purpose in 5 minutes | Adam Leipzig | TEDxMalibu
Life Purpose in 5 minutes, 5 Questions:
1. Who are you? How do you define yourself?
2. What do you do? (to teach or help other people)
3. Who do you do it for?
4. What do those people want and need?
5. How do they change as a result?
ah. look at what i wrote in my latest cv...
“Creative, Passionate, Dedicated, People-Oriented”
My passion for meaningful work drives me - partnering with clients, collaborating with
others, or mentoring and nurturing young adults. i strive to creatively meet their needs
and goals. with what i can do, i seek to add value and change lives for the better.

FAST FORWARD 2026
no more story classes in 2026 :(
i've been doing Research classes (for their fyp's) for past 2-3 years.
then i took on Issues in Society classes in 2026 which i enjoyed very much.
sadly, these Issues classes are on their last run ... no more Issues classes after this year.
2026 - took on 2nd and 3rd year students - some former students, some new...
and i'm pleasantly surprised and happy to see how my students are grateful and appreciative of my efforts... some are asking for consult for their fyp six months early LOL :D
