the concepts/techniques behind taijiquan -
  • ying - yang
  • 八法 8 techniques (8 gates)
  • 五步 5 steps
  • animal movements, eg cat light steps, tiger, crane, monkey, etc
The eight techniques 八法 Bafa represent the eight fundamental methods of training the body’s power, and lays the foundation of all the skills and techniques of taijiquan.

Taijiquan’s basic movements center upon wubu (五步 five steps) and bafa (八法 eight techniques, eight gates) with a series of routines, exercises and tuishou (推手 hand-pushing skills performed with a counterpart).

八法 Bafa refers to
1- HEAVEN - peng (棚 ward off),
2- EARTH - lü (捋 roll back),
3- WATER - ji (挤 press),
4- FIRE - an (按 push),
5- WIND - cai (pull down),
6- THUNDER - lie (split),
7- VALLEY - zhou (elbow strike) and
8- MOUNTAIN - kao (lean).
